Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) and Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE)
At Higher Failsworth Primary School, we believe that PSHE and RSHE are vital in preparing our pupils to become confident, healthy, respectful, and responsible members of society. Our curriculum ensures that every child develops the knowledge, skills, and attitudes they need to lead safe, happy, and fulfilling lives—both now and in the future.
Through our PSHE and RSHE curriculum, pupils learn about families, friendships, and respectful relationships (including online), as well as how to look after their mental and physical health, make informed choices, and understand how to stay safe in a range of contexts. Children explore themes such as equality, kindness, consent, and resilience, developing respect for themselves and others in an inclusive and diverse world.
We use the Kapow Primary scheme of work, which provides a comprehensive, age-appropriate, and progressive programme aligned with the statutory DfE Relationships, Sex and Health Education guidance (2019). Lessons encourage reflection, enquiry, and discussion, allowing pupils to develop self-awareness, empathy, and emotional literacy.
PSHE and RSHE are not taught in isolation but are woven throughout our wider curriculum and supported by assemblies, themed events, and community projects. We also promote pupil voice through our active School Council, where children learn about democracy, participation, and responsibility.
We work closely with parents and carers to ensure our curriculum is transparent, inclusive, and reflective of our school community. By the time pupils leave Higher Failsworth Primary School, they are equipped with the confidence, compassion, and moral understanding needed to make positive contributions to their community and the wider world.
