SEND & Inclusion

We work extremely hard at Higher Failsworth to provide an inclusive school environment for all of our pupils, regardless of their abilities. We have children with a wide variety of needs attending our school including Autistic Spectrum Disorder, Down Syndrome, hearing impairments, verbal dyspraxia, visual impairment, complex medical needs and physical disabilities.

Children with special educational needs are supported in a variety of ways.  We have skilled teaching assistants who can support and teach children using particular interventions and strategies.  We liaise closely with health professionals such as speech and language therapists, occupational therapists and paediatricians to ensure that programmes are delivered appropriately.  We use Signalong and Sign Supported English to support communication within school.

Miss Curtis is our SENCo and has completed the National SENCo award. She has a PGCE in Autistic Spectrum Disorders and has completed the AMBDA course to assess for dyslexia. Miss Curtis is supported by our SEN Teaching Assistants, who have also undertaken a wide variety of training and development to ensure they are equipped with the skills and expertise needed to support our children. The SEN TA’s work under the direction of the SENCo and Class Teachers to ensure we are meeting the needs of all of our SEND pupils.

We have a great team in school who support the children in a variety of ways; from the Teaching Assistants in classes to our School Governors who have a good knowledge of special needs.

Our Sensory Room

We are very fortunate at Higher Failsworth to be able to have a dedicated Sensory Room in our school. Our sensory immersive environment ensures that where children who have developmental and sensory difficulties, they can learn through a range of various technologies and experiences to help them to feel safe and secure in our school.

Included in the room is:

  • Fibre optic light panel
  • Vibro-acoustic plinth
  • UV strip light and a range of accessories
  • Ripple effect wall light
  • Large short throw projector
  • A range of coloured LED spotlights
  • Video Player

 Our Facilities Rooms

We have 2 facilities rooms in our school;  one in Key Stage 1 and one in Key Stage 2. Both rooms are fully accessible. Our facilities room on the key stage 2 side of school has a track hoist and bed for changing children where this is needed.

Our whole school building is on one floor and is almost fully wheelchair accessible.
